Episode 40: A/V Club – Podcasts

This week we’re debuting the A/V Club, in which Janine and Shannon will periodically talk about things we enjoy watching and/or listening to. This first A/V Club is a discussion of the podcasts we listen to. But first we kick it off with an unrelated anecdote about accidentally eating dog food.

Discussion topics include these podcasts:

  • Stand Out (from the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals)
  • Generations Cafe (genealogy podcast from Amy Johnson Crow)
  • Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard
  • Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend
  • Happier with Gretchen Rubin (it inspired this podcast!)
  • How I Built This with Guy Raz
  • The Tim Ferriss Show
  • Everything Is Alive
  • The West Wing Weekly
  • Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me
  • Dirty John
  • S-Town
  • My Dad Wrote a Porno (please don’t judge)
  • Slow Burn
  • TED Radio Hour

And we wrapped it up with a little discussion of not letting perfectionism get in the way of listening to podcasts.

  1. I love to listen to Malcolm Gladwell’s podcast Revisionist History . It delves into the truth of things you think you know and surprises you with the way they really are. Also if you are a country music fan, I enjoy Cocaine and Rhinestones about the history of country music.

  2. Janine recently turned Shannon on to a great podcast, What Should I Read Next. It starts with a great interview, then, the guest shares three books they love and one they don’t. The host, Ann Bogel, makes three book recommendations based on this. It’s sort of like that part of Splendid Table when Lynn Rossetto Kasper would come up with something spectacular to cook out of the weird and paltry contents of a caller’s refrigerator.

  3. Lots of good recommendations. I am concentrating on the GTGE podcast series right now. I’m on 40 and you just posted number 41. After that I will start listening to the Generations Cafe podcasts by Amy Johnson Crow to goad me into working on my genealogy again. I also want to listen to the Genealogy Happy Hour series of podcasts. (Looking for another 30×30 challenge, Janine!) And then I will check out some of these other podcasts.
